On 16 December 1971, he engaged multiple enemy Patton tanks in a fierce confrontation. Tragically, Khetarpal was martyred during the battle at the young age of 21. His actions, however, played a crucial role in slowing the enemy advance and protecting his comrades. For his bravery, he was posthumously awarded India’s Param Vir Chakra, the nation’s highest military honor.
