Officials in Delhi have outlined a package of measures aimed at improving safety and support systems for women in the city, signifying a renewed focus on legal infrastructure, public surveillance and economic empowerment.

The proposals were detailed during the launch of “Shakti Samvad,” a two‑day capacity building and training programme organised by the National Commission for Women (NCW). Speakers at the event highlighted multiple steps intended to address concerns around women’s safety, access to justice and workplace inclusion.

A central element of the plan is the deployment of around 10,000 high‑tech cameras and 100,000 smart sensor‑enabled LED lights across public areas. These devices are designed to augment existing city surveillance systems, potentially providing clearer visibility of public spaces and aiding law enforcement agencies in crime response and evidence gathering. Officials have said these would function as part of broader safety infrastructure upgrades.

In addition to surveillance technology, authorities have approved the creation of 53 new judicial posts to support dedicated fast‑track courts. These courts are intended to expedite legal proceedings in cases involving crimes against women and help reduce the backlog of pending matters that can delay justice for victims. Legal experts have long pointed to delays in the judicial system as a deterrent for those seeking closure in sensitive cases.

The event also underscored steps to encourage women’s participation in the workforce. This includes provisions allowing women to work night shifts under strict safety protocols, and the expansion of childcare support through the establishment of 500 “palna kendras” (childcare centres) to assist working mothers. Such support measures aim to reduce barriers for women balancing career responsibilities with family care.

Economic empowerment was also highlighted, with plans to introduce collateral‑free loans of up to ₹10 crore to assist women entrepreneurs in launching or expanding businesses. Advocates say access to finance can be a key factor in enhancing women’s participation in the economy and strengthening their financial independence.

While the initiatives span security, legal and economic fronts, civil society groups note that effective implementation, transparent oversight and broader community engagement will be essential to realise tangible improvements in women’s everyday safety and empowerment in Delhi.
