Lizzo is facing heavy backlash after defending Jay-Z in a now-deleted TikTok responding to his name appearing in the Epstein files. Critics accused the singer of minimizing serious allegations and chasing favour, prompting her to pull the post.

Singer and rapper Lizzo sparked controversy online when she posted a video on TikTok addressing the recent release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, which included the name of rapper Jay-Z. In the clip, she called out people jumping to conclusions based simply on someone’s name appearing in the documents. Her intent—she said—was to question how names are interpreted and whether the files alone are enough to judge someone.
In the now-deleted TikTok, Lizzo directly questioned how Jay-Z’s name was being interpreted in the Epstein files, telling viewers, “What did it say Jay-Z did? He was there in 1996. Come on, people, you are falling for it!” She went on to argue that Epstein mentioning the rapper didn’t amount to misconduct, claiming Epstein had only referenced Jay-Z once in passing, saying something along the lines of, “We can learn from Jay-Z’s business model.” Lizzo repeatedly pressed critics to focus on concrete details rather than speculation, asking bluntly, “Where’s the crime? Focus.” She also pushed back against broader online pile-ons, touching on criticism surrounding Diddy’s parties and even referencing filmmaker Mira Nair, suggesting certain figures were being unfairly targeted while others escaped scrutiny. At one point, she accused viewers of losing sight of the facts, telling them, “You’re distracted. You just want Mamdani to be the bad guy.”
What Lizzo said in the now-deleted video
After facing backlash for her Tiktok defending Jay Z and implying that the Epstein Files aren’t a reliable source to hold people accountable, Lizzo deleted the aforementioned video.

Fans slam Lizzo on social media
An X user shared a copy of an FBI complaint naming Jay-Z, which was included in the roughly three million Epstein-related documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice on January 30.

"Thinking she’ll win points with Jay, etc. Read the room, genius. The party’s over. It’s time to take out the trash," added another user.
One person noted, "This is exactly why I don't support celebrities. There are way too many of them that defend crimes and degeneracy."
"She wants to be in Jay Z's good graces to further her 'career,'" one alleged.
In the latest release of documents tied to Jeffrey Epstein’s case, Jay-Z’s name came up in a specific way, but not as part of concrete evidence against him. The U.S. Department of Justice published millions of pages, including “crisis intake” reports submitted to an FBI hotline, which are essentially unverified tips from the public. One of those reports, from 2019, includes a caller’s account alleging that in the mid-1990s she woke up after being drugged in what she believed was Epstein’s Florida home and saw Jay-Z (Shawn Carter) and convicted Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein in the room. Another part of the same set of files mentions rapper Pusha T in a separate claim.
These materials are anonymous and not part of verified evidence, and importantly, Jay-Z does not appear in Epstein’s flight logs, contact lists, or any official investigative findings tied directly to Epstein’s crimes. Legal analysts have repeatedly pointed out that being “named” in a raw FBI intake document does not mean someone was investigated, charged, or found guilty of wrongdoing; it’s simply a “tip” that was logged and released as part of government transparency efforts.
